Ido Michaeli

Ido Michaeli (b. 1980) is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in New York and Connecticut. His practice exists at the intersection of art, design, and craft, working across textiles, stained glass, ceramics, painting, and video to create richly detailed works exploring cultural identity, tradition, and the relationships between different communities and worldviews.

Born into an immigrant family, Michaeli grew up navigating contrasting cultural identities—the Eastern traditions of his family alongside the Western environment surrounding him. This experience became central to his artistic practice and continues to inform his exploration of cultural codes, identity, and belonging.

Collaboration and traditional craftsmanship are fundamental to Michaeli’s work. His projects frequently begin with elaborate images and designs that are then realized in collaboration with skilled artisans from different parts of the world. Through these partnerships, traditional techniques become part of a contemporary artistic dialogue.

Michaeli’s work addresses themes of interculturalism, identity politics, global economies, and post-colonialism. At the heart of his practice is an interest in bridging cultural divides and challenging racial, cultural, and political stereotypes. He views art as a space where seemingly conflicting perspectives can meet and common ground can emerge.

Through his collaborations with traditional craftspeople, Michaeli also brings attention to techniques and traditions that can be overlooked within contemporary culture. The resulting works invite viewers to encounter another perspective while considering the histories, experiences, and values that cultures share.

Michaeli’s work has been exhibited extensively in galleries and museums internationally. He holds a Master of Arts and a Bachelor of Design from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem.

Exhibition at Victor Gallery

The presentation brings Michaeli’s contemporary approach to textile art into dialogue with antique rugs from the Victor Gallery collection and contemporary rugs from Turquoise Mountain.
